PLEASE READ NARRATIVE--
This is a Black-chinned hummingbird nest in central Texas. They are made of spider web, plant seed fluff, animal hair, and covered with lichen for camouflage. There are two eggs in this one and one image has my thumb in it for scale.
--INTERESTING BACKSTORY---
I found a hummingbird nest a couple of days ago with the help of a spider....yes a spider. I find HB nests every year but this was the first time a spider helped me.
I'm a nature nerd that thrives on off-the-wall interactions with anything wild. Our place has several cave openings & I'm sure others I haven't discovered. This particular cave entrance is about 100-125 yards from the larger "bat cave" entrance where the cave myotis & great plains ratsnakes interact (seen in other videos on my channel). I'm sure the caves are connected but you can't crawl from one to the other...yet. This opening drops straight down about 10-12 feet opening into a single small room with numerous smaller opening too small for me to crawl through. Over the years this opening had become obscured by several bushy cedar elms so I removed them this morning & while I was at it, I got inside the entrance & threw out a bunch of loose rocks.
After a while, I got hot & sweaty I decided to rest & sat across the entrance with my feet resting on the opposing rock wall. Now I understand a lot of folks are scared of spiders but I'm not. In fact, I like them. About that time, a large garden spider (Argiope) crawled onto my boot then made his way to my knee. I just patiently sat & watched as this spider began to make a web from my leg to the cave wall. I thought this was pretty cool fully realizing I was going to have to move eventually but in that length of time, he did lay out four scaffold lines before I had to destroy his creation.
While this was going on, I had to sit very still so the spider wouldn't go away because I wanted to see what was going to happen next. While sitting there, I was enjoying the spider as well as the rest of the surrounding sights, sounds, & smells of nature in the morning. It was still pretty early & I noticed a hummingbird lurking around a nearby cedar elm where she had no reason to be.....unless she had a nest. I watched closely & sure enough she flew to and settled down on a nest on a descending branch about 8-10 feet above the ground.
I can truly thank that spider for making me sit still a little longer than usual to locate the nest & share these pics with y'all.
